The december moth differs from P. alpina by its less contrasting and almost monochromatic colored wings. As is the case with snout moths, this species also expreses sexual dimorphism with females being larger and males smaller. It inhabits forest habitats, groves, forest edges and even parks. Adult moths are active late in the year, between October and December. The caterpillars of this species feed on the leaves of various deciduous trees. In the area of Croatia, the distribution of the december moth is not the best researched, but it is likely that it inhabits all larger wooded areas, primarily in mountainous and continental regions. It is missing in the coastal area and the Adriatic islands.
